Mexicans and the California Gold Rush

The California Gold Rush attracted diverse peoples from across the globe and those of American Mexican heritage played significant roles in the history of the economic development as well as the formation of California.

Mexicans and Mexican-Californians ("Californios") played a vital role in the California Gold Rush 1850, contributing their advanced mining techniques, labor, sharing their cuisine and knowledge of the terrain. Their positive impacts significantly fueled the early stages of the gold rush, and historically speaking, have been largely written out of the history books as one of these significant peoples and nationalities that played a role to help fuel the gold rush.

Mexican-American War and the Mexican Cession (1846-1848):

Driven by the U.S. ideology of Manifest Destiny, the war concluded with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico was forced to cede nearly half of its territory to the U.S., which included present-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, and other western states.
